WebClamshell mode works fine for me on my M1 Air, using either a Caldigit TB3 dock (with a monitor over DisplayPort) or a USB-C hub with a monitor over HDMI. I’m not sure it’s still a requirement on the M1 Macs, but I know with the Intel laptops clamshell mode only works if you’re plugged into power.
