The resolution is definitely adequate, if you’ve got a soft photo it is most likely to be caused by misfocus. Stop it down to f/2 and you’ll see considerable improvement in resolution. This is not the sharpest of the 50-is mm focal length though it's still "sharp." That's why I use it for portraits mostly.
