My Experiences with Homeopathy

My earliest experience with homeopathic medicine was picking up the "No Jet Lag" in an international airport.  I used to work in the fashion industry and long haul travels were part of my life.  This simple remedy was like a God-send.  And it worked!

Another experience was with a more acute situation.  I was on the flight from Hong Kong to Paris.  I started to feel shivery and heavy headed on the plane and the 11 hours flight was like eternity.  By the time I arrived I was feeling so sick I could hardly lift my luggage.  My friend met me and took my bags and I told her I must have got a flu and I needed medicine.  (I had a temeprature too)

She took me to her small neighbourhood pharmacy and she helped me translate and describe my symptoms to the staff.  Then I was given some vitamin C tabs and a homeopathic remedy called "Oscillococcinum".  Apparently it's very common in France and everybody knows about it and uses it for flu.  (Homeopathy has its roots in Europe, and is also favoured by the Royal Family in UK)  I did everything I normally did when I had a flu - took Vit. C and lots of water, warm baths, kept myself really warm which encouraged sweating, and this homeopathic remedy.  And viola! The next morning I was already feeling much better and the temperature was almost gone.  The second morning I was 90% OK - no headaches and muscle aches nor fever.  The third day I was functioning normal again!  It was the shortest flu I had experienced.  I knew very well if I had taken Aspirin or some conventional over-the-counter medicine the sickly feeling would have lasted much longer.

I was very impressed with this magic medicine.  Later I found it being sold in Hong Kong at IMI (Integrated Medicine Institute), which also carries the "No Jet Lag".  (In fact I think it took a few years before the "No Jet Lag" was available commonly in the drug stores in Hong Kong airport. I used to have to bring it back overseas)  And a few practitioners at IMI and elsehwere practice homeopathic medicine and give customized prescriptions.

My third experience with it was more to do with its effect on emotion.

It was early in my career as a lifestyle coach in Hong Kong.  I was having lunch with Graeme Bradshaw, founder of IMI.  I was suffering from allergy cough (it was winter and I often developed it when it's cold and when I am stressed).  I didn't feel supported by my family and friends who had no idea what I was trying to set up (which I could totally understand) and was feeling like it was so hard trying to start over a new life.  And over the conversation tears started to swell up in my eyes.  I got very sad and we couldn't talk about work as we were supposed to.  At the end of the lunch Graeme gave me a prescription of a homeopathic remedy called "Ignatia" and told me to get it at the dispensary.  I thought it was for my cough because I had asked him for that.  I took it as prescribed.  The next day I was "springing" and happy.  I asked him what he gave me.  He replied "it's for teary-eyes" with a smile.  I thought he was joking! Later I found out from Tej (another naturopath and homoepath at IMI) that it's for sadness, "uncontrollable crying", cough due to emotional stress, migraine, etc...  Well, who would have thought one medicine could treat all these conditions?  And the beauty of homepathic medicine is that one size often doesn't fit all.  Not all coughs, or all headaches are best treated by the same medicine.  When you see a well trained and experienced homepath, they would spend time taking a very detailed health history which includes your parents' health and your major life experiences.  They also determine your constitution by asking you many questions and by observation.  A good homeopath is almost like your friend.  (And of course it helps when your friend happens to be a homeopath!)

My family and I have been blessed to have benefitted from the prescriptions of Tej and Graeme.  They are both naturopaths and homeopaths.

My favourite homeopath in town is Dr. Sonal at IMI.  She's very attentive, patient and caring.  Her medicine has helped my Dad, who is diabetic, healed faster than usual after a major operation.  She has also helped me with colds and flus, strained muscles and tendons (from yoga).  Her specialty is children developmental issues like learning disabilities and ADD.

I trust homeopathy when it's adminstered by a good practitioner.  It's safe, economical and easy to take.  They usually come in tiny sugary pills or tasteless tincture and not bitter at all - which makes it preferable to herbal medicine and TCM sometimes, especially for those who can't stand strange tasting medicine!

Here's an article by Dr. Sonal which answers many common questions about Homeopathy
